GM and the electric car: a murder-suicide?

GM and the electric car: a murder-suicide?

The Record, Harvard Law School, MA

9 hours ago by Matt Hutchins

Americans have to ask themselves at this point what could have happened to lead to such a crisis in a set of companies which are vital to the U.S. economy and which enjoyed record profits in the late 90's early part of this decade. Rising benefits costs for union workers and intense competition from foreign firms have been advanced as primary factors, but there are many voices crying that the entrenched powers in auto manufacturing have created their own dilemma by failing to exercise the foresight to design more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Letter to the Editor: Facebook makes casual crushes, relationships tricky

Huntington News, Northeastern University, MA

I know what you're thinking and I know your reaction when I mention another commentary about Facebook. But before you roll your eyes and log back into your account, consider this: if you have 1,800 friends, why are you alone?

I realize it is presumptuous of me to ignorantly predict your reaction to Facebook, or assume that you are by yourself.

Commentary: Obama biracial, not black

Huntington News, Northeastern University, MA

It is unfortunate that many newspapers and other media are declaring Barack Obama as the first black or African-American US presidential winner. Instead, Obama is a biracial person because his loving mother and her parents are Caucasian.

Yes we can talk to Iran

The Daily Collegian, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA

I'm thankful McCain lost, but an Obama presidency gets me about as giddy as I've been these past eight years under Bush. That is, not at all.

I sure felt left out when clusters of jaunty, overjoyed students screamed into the night, enthusiastically hugging each other in warm embrace, convinced their problems would evaporate with the passing old-world Bush years and that Barack Obama would fulfill every dream they envisioned in their unencumbered Election Night ecstasy.

GOP ship sinks, McCain goes down with pride

Suffolk Journal, Suffolk University, MA

I don't remember the last time I was so happy I cried, or when I watched more MSNBC than I did NESN, but it happened during this Presidential election.

However, historical elections can do that, especially after eight years of President George W. Bush. Although President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama's administration has yet to take office, we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing America will not have another four years of Bush in the form of John McCain.

Connecticut residents admit they live in worst state in the union

Suffolk Journal, Suffolk University, MA

5 hours ago by Matt Altieri

As a Connecticut resident, there's something about my state that makes me sick to my stomach. Maybe it's the temperamental spoiled girl that I work with, or the thousands of collar popped UConn students with too much of their parent's money than they know what to do with, and that I have to deal with whenever I visit the campus.

Walking through the Mods on Saturday before the football game, I heard several Boston College students address a Notre Dame fan by shouting, "Hey, Notre Dame sucks, you faggot!" I responded swiftly with a raised voice, deriding the BC students for their use of a homophobic slur and their total lack of respect toward a guest to our campus.

Turnitin questions go unanswered

The Comment, Bridgewater State College, MA

Last semester, I wrote an article about Turnitin where I laid out reasons why I do not like its use at BSC. This semester, I decided to do more research on Turnitin and its application on campus.

I contacted Eric LePage of the Teaching and Technology Center to ask if I could interview him.

Column: Obama, the 'post-media' president?

The Llama Ledger, Bard College at Simon's Rock, MA

19 hours ago by Tony Romm | The Eagle (American University)

It is post-Baby Boomer, post-partisan, post-racial, and most importantly, post-Bush. And add to that list of unfounded hyperboles one new construction: "post-media." Throughout the 2008 horse race, now-President-elect Barack Obama demonstrated a proclivity toward digital media.

As an actor, Clint Eastwood will probably be known for his roles as a magnum-toting cop, or the cowboy whose devil-may-care attitude dominates the West. Though a legendary actor, Eastwood has shifted primarily to the director's chair, where he recently turned out Million Dollar Baby and The Flags of Our Fathers.

Only at a UConn men's basketball game will you hear someone yell to the referee, "Why don't you get on your knees and blow the game, ref!"

Guilty. I opened six boxes of Cookie Crisp in North dining hall just to get the free "Madagascar" toys.

To everyone who saw me fall down the stairs in Arjona: Thanks for taking the time to stop and laugh.

To the Fox Broadcasting Company: I am proud of you for finally learning from your mistakes. Last month, Fox decided that even though the ratings were low, they would order a full season for "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". The show, which is based off of James Cameron's popular "Terminator" movies, has been on the air for about a year now.

Necessity For Economic Aid To Foster Change In Haiti

The Tripod, Trinity College (CT), CT

America has had its moments of change throughout its history. Change and progress have come to define America since its inception regardless of the length of time they take to come about. The ultimate sign of progress and change in America took place on November 4 with the election of a biracial candidate to the nation's most powerful office.

Could the Cost of Commuting Turn Away Future Students?

The Suffolk Voice, Suffolk University, MA

1 day ago by Manny Veiga

Last Friday, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board approved several toll hikes that would drastically increase tolls west of Route 128 along the Mass Pike. This past Saturday, the MBTA put its scheduled $2 increase in station parking fees into effect. What impact might these moves have on schools like Suffolk - primarily a commuter school, located in the heart of Boston?

The Llama Sutra delights in answering your questions about sex and relationships, but this week we'd like to talk about something else. Gender-neutral housing options help everyone have the housing they find most comfortable. Such options are spreading across the country, and it's a movement Simon's Rock should join.

Carver Diserens: I'm going to do something I haven't done since our long interview, I'm going to ask you two shorter questions that don't really have anything to do with each other. First, who would you say is the most famous or influential person that you know? Jimmy Jones: I would have to divide famous into any number of sub-categories.

Dubowitz Derides the 'Drunk Bus' Patrons

The Tripod, Trinity College (CT), CT

On many a Thursday evening, I end up taking the shuttle, a.k.a. the "drunk bus", to get across campus, back to my dorm. With the shuttle's newly-added G.P.S. and its overall reliability, I've personally been very pleased with its return to Trinity and know many others who feel the same way.

Southern hospitality an inspiration for BC

The Issue: FSU fans extend kindness to BC travelers

What we think: Warm welcome part of good sportsmanship

As Florida Staters showed many Eagles fans on the road this weekend, Southern hospitality is about more than hearty pecan pies and "y'all"s steeped in thick accents. It's about opening up your tailgate to travelers, offering them food, drink, and friendly conversation, bringing them into "enemy territory" and showing them that all rivalry need not be hostile.

My heart aches for this community. I've heard my fair share of opinions on this campus in response to recent events, and I can't believe how narrow-minded, inconsiderate, and even disrespectful some of them have been. What's even more unfortunate is that we are not the only institution that is experiencing these growing pains.
